An independent selection panel will be formed to evaluate and shortlist candidates for the position of Commissioner of Police. This decision was announced in a press statement following a meeting of the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) held in Suva.
According to the statement, the commission will review the assessment report prepared by the panel before recommending an appointment to His Excellency the President. Out of the 30 applicants for the Commissioner of Police role, four are women, highlighting an effort to promote gender diversity in high-ranking positions.
Additionally, the COC discussed nominations for the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC). In line with Section 75 (6) of the Constitution, the new EC chair must either be a current judge or possess qualifications to serve as one. The commission is currently evaluating possible candidates following the resignation of Ms. Barbara Malimali.
The COC also approved recommendations from an independent committee regarding the pay and allowances for those appointed to serve in constitutional roles.
This move towards an independent selection process for the Commissioner of Police is a hopeful step in ensuring transparency and fairness in appointing key leaders in law enforcement. Furthermore, the commitment to finding a qualified individual for the role of the Electoral Commission chair indicates a strong focus on maintaining the integrity of electoral processes.
