PALM Protections Expand as Australia-Fiji Cooperation Grows

The Australian High Commission has voiced its disappointment regarding the spread of disinformation surrounding the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme. In a recent statement, it clarified that the Australian Prime Minister has not made any recent comments pertaining to PALM, nor have there been any related reports from Australia’s 9 News network on this topic.

The Commission emphasized the positive impact of PALM workers, highlighting their crucial economic contribution to Australia and the enrichment they bring to communities across the nation. The Australian government remains steadfast in its commitment to the program, which offers Fijians invaluable work experience and skill development that benefits their home communities.

This stance aligns with ongoing efforts by both the Australian and Fijian governments to enhance the welfare and protections of PALM workers. Recent initiatives introduced by the Australian government focus on ensuring fair pay and safe working conditions, particularly for those in lower-skilled and seasonal jobs. Measures now mandate that PALM employers provide a minimum of 120 paid work hours every four weeks, with an obligation to cover accommodation and transport costs for workers receiving less than 20 hours per week.

Fiji’s Employment Ministry has been addressing concerns over outdated information regarding PALM, reiterating the significant improvements made under the Coalition Government to the rights and welfare of Fijian workers over the past two years. Minister Agni Deo Singh has highlighted strategies including the appointment of Country Liaison Officers, ongoing engagement with Australian authorities, and annual visits to foster communication with workers in Australia.

Both governments are cooperating actively to navigate issues and improve conditions under PALM, which instills optimism regarding future reforms. The narrative suggests that with these proactive measures, the treatment and welfare of workers can only enhance, underscoring a shared commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of migrant workers in Australia. This joint dedication points towards a more supportive environment for all involved, promising hope for the future of Fijians seeking employment abroad.
