Eunice Akiwo, Palau’s Director for Domestic Affairs, emphasized the vital role of supporting parents within a gender-focused approach to family resourcing during her speech at the Pacific welcome reception of the 69th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York. She announced new “Maternity Parental Leave” provisions aimed at enhancing the support systems for families, especially those in vulnerable situations.
Akiwo highlighted the importance of inclusivity and accessibility in early childhood development, stressing the significance of nurturing from pregnancy through the early toddler years to establish a solid foundation prior to formal education. She also advocated for promoting the Palauan language and cultural values in parenting, underscoring the need for both mothers and fathers to actively engage in their children’s upbringing.
In her address, Akiwo mentioned Palau’s transition to a value-added tax system following its COVID-19 recovery, which has already started to yield financial gains. She pointed to community efforts surrounding subsidies to support marginalized groups—including individuals with disabilities and Indigenous populations—and improve access to virtual education and telehealth services.
Addressing the broader challenges faced by Pacific nations, Akiwo reiterated Palau’s commitment to tackling gender-based violence (GBV) by enhancing access to counseling and support services, aiming for positive transformations within society. She acknowledged the impact of Palau’s matrilineal heritage in shaping gender policies and interventions.
Akiwo also highlighted a collaborative initiative between the Division of Gender and Pacific Women Lead, which organized the International Women’s Day 2025 summit that brought together over 70 leaders to discuss common national challenges. This collaboration not only strengthens local networks but also plays a part in developing a Micronesian Sub-Regional Gender Framework that aligns with both national and regional aspirations.
Akiwo’s advocacy illustrates a united effort to confront gender inequalities and create an environment conducive to family wellness. The progressive initiatives in Palau mirror similar efforts throughout the Pacific region, embodying a hopeful movement towards gender equity and empowerment.
As global dialogues on gender equality continue, Palau’s initiatives represent a significant commitment to reshaping societal norms and ensuring comprehensive support for all families, marking a positive step forward in a broader movement for change.
