Palau Prepares for Pacific Mini-Games with Urgent Budget Request

Palau’s President Surangel Whipps Jr. has presented a supplemental budget bill to the Olbiil Era Kelulau (OEK), requesting nearly US$1.2 million in new funding, along with the full appropriation of US$1.4 million already authorized for the upcoming Pacific Mini-Games. This proposal, submitted on April 4, is currently under review by the Senate Ways and Means Committee and aligns with the beginning of the third quarter of the fiscal year.

As preparations accelerate, with fewer than 80 days left until the start of the mini-games, Whipps highlighted the urgency in accessing these funds to ensure successful execution of the event. The Pacific Mini-Games are poised to be a significant event for Palau, with participation expected from around 1,200 athletes from 24 nations across 14 sports.

Recent reports have confirmed that Palau is making extensive preparations to host this major athletic event, which emphasizes regional unity and sportsmanship. The Palau Games Organising Committee expressed confidence in their readiness, as venues are nearing completion. This includes key facilities like the Palau Track & Field stadium, which will hold the opening and closing ceremonies.

The Pacific Mini-Games not only promise to showcase athletic talent but also provide an opportunity for local athletes to represent their nation on an international stage. The government, alongside community support, is working diligently to ensure that the games foster pride and excitement in Palau, contributing to a memorable experience for all participants.

As the nation gears up for this significant event, the developments reflect Palau’s commitment to sports, community engagement, and regional cooperation—offering a hopeful perspective for the future of athletic events in the Pacific region.
