Paddle for Cancer recently gifted the Fiji Cancer Society a cheque for $43,000, reflecting the funds raised during its October event. The presentation took place at the Society’s office in Suva, with Paddle for Cancer chairman Steven Andrews handing over the cheque to Belinda Chan from the Society.
Originally, the Paddle for Cancer event had raised $33,400 on Castaway Island, but that amount was subsequently increased through additional contributions. During the presentation, Andrews expressed gratitude for the opportunity to support the Society’s crucial work in the fight against cancer. He emphasized the importance of community involvement and sponsorship in raising funds for such vital causes.
Belinda Chan, the chief executive officer of the Fiji Cancer Society, expressed her appreciation for the paddling event organizers selecting them as their charitable beneficiary. She highlighted that a significant portion of the funding—10 percent—would be allocated to research in palliative nursing, a critical yet underdeveloped area in both Fiji and the wider region.
The Paddle for Cancer event was founded by Andrews in memory of his nephew, Christian Pesamino, who lost his battle with leukaemia last year. This poignant motivation adds a personal touch to the initiative, showcasing how community efforts can emerge from personal loss to promote greater awareness and support in cancer care.
The event not only raised substantial funds but also fosters hope and advancement in cancer research and nursing care within Fiji. It serves as a reminder of the power of collective efforts in making a meaningful impact in the community.
