Paddle for Cancer Fiji: 36km Ocean Challenge for Christian Pesamino Leukaemia Foundation

Paddle for Cancer Fiji: 36km Ocean Challenge for Christian Pesamino Leukaemia Foundation

Preparations are underway for this year’s Paddle for Cancer event, where Fiji’s tourism and paddling communities are once again coming together to support a cause close to their hearts. This inspiring initiative, which started as a simple idea to unite people through sport, has evolved into a prominent fundraising event aiming to contribute to the fight against cancer.

Key players in this year’s event include representatives from Castaway Island Resort, Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, Sixth Senses Fiji, and the Nadi Bay Canoe Club. Together, they are organizing a 36-kilometre ocean paddle from Castaway Island Resort to Aquarius on the Beach at Wailoaloa. Nadi Bay Canoe Club paddlers are actively coaching staff teams from the resorts on crucial techniques such as endurance training and teamwork to ensure they are well-prepared for the challenge ahead.

A significant highlight of this year’s event will be the attendance of the Honourable Mr. Viliame Gavoka, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, who will serve as the chief guest, underscoring the event’s growth in recognition and scope over the years.

The organizers express heartfelt appreciation to the sponsors whose support makes this event possible. Transportation for the paddlers will be provided by South Sea Cruises, and Aquarius on the Beach will host the post-paddle celebration ceremony. Safety measures will be reinforced through support boats from Castaway Island Resort, Musket Cove, and the Dulcenia, ensuring that all participants successfully complete their journey.

Funds raised during the event will support the Christian Pesamino Leukaemia Foundation, established in memory of Christian Pesamino—a former paddler who sadly passed away from leukaemia at a young age. The idea for Paddle for Cancer originated from a conversation between Christian and his uncle about raising funds for cancer awareness through paddling. Although Christian is no longer with us, his legacy continues through this annual event, which fosters unity, courage, and hope among the families affected by cancer across Fiji.

Participants and supporters have various ways to contribute, including sponsorships ranging from bronze to gold levels and direct donations. Additionally, individuals can sponsor the event at $10 per kilometre, further encouraging community involvement in this noble cause.

Every contribution helps bring hope and care to those in Fiji affected by cancer, reinforcing the sense of community and collective effort that defines Paddle for Cancer. This event not only pays tribute to a beloved paddler but also shines a light on the ongoing fight against cancer and the vital support required for families affected by this disease.
