Securing the upcoming COP31 is of utmost importance for the Pacific Island nations. During the recent Pacific Regional and National Security Conference, Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the need for international policymakers and financial institutions to witness firsthand the challenges faced by Pacific communities. He advocates for hosting COP31 in the Pacific to ensure these leaders understand the urgent realities of climate change confronting the region.

Professor Prasad’s comments highlight the severe impact of climate change, warning that Fiji could lose more than 50% of its land-based economy with just a 1.5 degrees Celsius increase in global temperatures. This growth in temperature is significant because hundreds of communities in the Pacific are already being relocated due to the effects of more frequent super-cyclones, king tides, and extreme rainfall. Countries are also working to rebuild critical infrastructure that has been damaged.

The Deputy Prime Minister stated that having COP31 hosted in Australia and the Pacific would provide a crucial platform for community leaders—including women, youth, persons with disabilities, and the elderly—to share their stories directly with the world. This approach emphasizes authenticity and could foster greater understanding and empathy regarding the Pacific’s plight.

Prasad also noted the event will create an opportunity to present key homegrown initiatives from the Blue Pacific for international endorsement. By gaining global recognition and backing, these proposals could drive more effective climate action and strengthen regional resilience, ultimately ensuring that the voices of Pacific peoples are amplified on the global stage.

Fiji’s advocacy for a Pacific-hosted COP31 reflects a commitment highlighted in previous gatherings, where climate resilience models and strategies were discussed. This ongoing dialogue signifies hope for the Pacific region as they strive to address pressing climate challenges while advocating for collaborative support from the international community.

The emphasis on securing a platform for local narratives during COP31 represents a strategic move that can contribute to more meaningful climate policies, fostering a united front in negotiations where collective action is crucial in facing unprecedented climate threats.
