Papua New Guinea’s Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources, Jelta Wong, recently spoke at the Honiara Fisheries Summit to elaborate on the East New Britain Initiative (ENBi). This initiative aims to foster collaboration among Pacific Island nations, enhancing the management and sustainable development of the region’s tuna fisheries.
Minister Wong highlighted the obstacles that Pacific nations face, including poor infrastructure, high operational costs, and limited access to skilled labor. He emphasized the importance of unity among these countries, stating that isolated efforts in pursuing tuna investments would not yield the best results. ENBi seeks to transcend this independent approach by promoting collective action and leveraging the unique strengths of each nation to address shared challenges.
The initiative acts as a platform for Pacific nations to come together, align their efforts, and engage with external partners to create beneficial tuna trading opportunities. Wong stressed that the region is home to some of the world’s best-managed tuna resources, and by working in unison, they can protect these assets and thrive economically.
He also referenced the successes of other regional agreements, such as the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in Honiara that aims to establish a “100×100” framework focusing on monitoring and processing tuna catches locally. This reflects a growing recognition that sustainable fisheries can propel economic growth while ensuring the ecological balance of marine resources.
Wong’s address articulated a vision where Pacific nations actively control and process their fisheries, rejecting external influences that might undermine their autonomy and economic potential. By fostering collaboration, Minister Wong believes that Pacific countries can chart a new course for their fisheries, leading to improved livelihoods and environmental stewardship.
