Fiji and Papua New Guinea have formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly host the 9th Pacific Tuna Forum, which will take place in Nadi from October 14-15, 2025. This agreement was officially signed during the Honiara Summit 2025 by responsible authorities from both nations, with Fiji’s Ministry of Fisheries leading the signing process.

The Pacific Tuna Forum serves as an influential biennial platform, originally launched in Papua New Guinea in 2007, aimed at bringing together key stakeholders from the regional and global tuna sectors. The forum will facilitate critical discussions on various aspects of the tuna industry, including investment, trade, and sustainable development initiatives.

Fiji previously hosted the 5th Pacific Tuna Forum in 2015, showcasing its commitment to sustainable fishing practices and ocean resource management. This upcoming collaboration with Papua New Guinea emphasizes regional unity and the shared goal of enhancing economic growth through innovative and sustainable practices in the tuna industry.

Building on past forums, this event is expected to foster strengthened partnerships, enhanced trade opportunities, and sustainable resource management strategies, all of which are crucial for the future of tuna fishing in the Pacific. Overall, the collaboration between Fiji and Papua New Guinea reflects a hopeful commitment to driving sustainability and economic resilience within the Pacific tuna sector, promising positive outcomes for local fishing communities and the broader economy.
