Leaders of the Smaller Island States (SIS) within the Pacific Islands Forum convened to prepare their collective stance ahead of the larger Forum Leaders Retreat, which includes influential nations such as Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea. Representing the most vulnerable island nations, the SIS group comprises the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and Tuvalu. Tonga has shown interest in joining this bloc, and its inclusion was a topic of discussion at the meeting.

The SIS group plays a crucial role in ensuring that the interests of smaller island nations are given due prominence in larger regional dialogues. President Taneti Maamau of Kiribati, the current SIS Chair, highlighted the significance of their discussions in shaping future regional deliberations. Previous SIS meetings have pointed out that larger Forum members and various donors often overlook their specific needs and priorities, an issue that has stirred disagreements, such as the withdrawal of five Micronesian states.

The SIS leaders are strongly advocating for urgent action on climate change, the removal of nuclear contaminants, and enhanced connectivity in terms of shipping and aviation services. Additionally, there is a call for increased contributions to the SIS Development Fund, aimed at bolstering capacity for these smaller states. The outgoing Chairman, President Wesley Simina of the Federated States of Micronesia, stressed the need to elevate the most vulnerable among the Pacific nations, urging immediate and practical action to ensure survival.

Educational initiatives also play a pivotal role in the empowerment of SIS, with many students attending regional institutions like the University of the South Pacific. However, recent issues within the regional setup have led to the expansion of local educational facilities in several states, offering more options and better addressing local needs amidst global competitions, such as with China.

Baron Waqa, Secretary-General of the Pacific Islands Forum, reiterated the Forum Secretariat’s commitment to supporting these nations by providing technical backing, policy advice, and necessary political space to elevate SIS voices on regional and global platforms. The efforts of the SIS group signal a desire to fortify Pacific solidarity, driving the focus toward sustainability and resilience in the face of profound climate challenges.

The actions and commitments emerging from these discussions are expected to influence broader regional policies and emphasize the need to safeguard the interests of smaller island nations amidst global uncertainties and complex geopolitical landscapes.
