King Tupou VI of Tonga and Queen Nanasipau’u were honored with a warm welcome during their state visit to Fiji today. Upon their arrival at Nausori Airport, they were greeted by Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Biman Prasad before embarking on a motorcade through the capital.

This visit, which underscores the longstanding ties between Fiji and Tonga, will see the royal couple attend the investiture ceremony of Roko Tevita Uluilakeba Mara as the Sau Ni Vanua on Lakeba. Earlier in the day, Roko Tevita was installed as Tui Nayau.

In Suva, the royals received a formal greeting from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, followed by a guard of honor consisting of 100 soldiers before being welcomed at Government House by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu. Both leaders highlighted the historical connections between the nations that date back centuries.

As part of the ceremonies, Lalabalavu awarded the king the honorary title of Companion of the Order of Fiji, recognizing his efforts to strengthen the relationship between the two countries and to care for the Fijian community residing in Tonga.

The Tongan delegation is expected to arrive in Tubou Village for ceremonies marking the elevation of Tui Nayau. Such royal visits emphasize the significant cultural heritage and interconnectedness of the Pacific nations, fostering a spirit of collaboration and friendship that can lead to a prosperous future.

The ongoing coordination by an inter-agency task force for the events surrounding this royal visit reflects a commitment to cultural appreciation and support for traditional leadership. With anticipation building, the joint celebrations serve as a hopeful reminder of the enduring bonds that unite the Pacific Island nations.
