Pacific Push to Secure COP31 Host as Australia Lobbies Türkiye

A prominent Pacific leader is urging Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to attend the upcoming UN climate summit in Brazil next month in a bid to secure hosting rights for COP31 in 2026 alongside Türkiye. Surangel Whipps Jr., President of Palau, emphasized the urgency of negotiations, stating it is “crunch time” for the summit as Australia seeks a compromise with Türkiye to facilitate its hosting of the conference with Pacific nations.

Whipps articulated the importance of Albanese’s presence in Belem, Brazil, at COP30, believing that his participation could significantly influence Türkiye’s decision-making to support Australia’s ambition. “We’re now just 12 months away and Australia needs all the time to prepare,” he remarked, reinforcing the importance of hosting a Pacific-centric COP.

Australia and Türkiye have been engaged in prolonged discussions regarding a co-presidency model for the summit, but Whipps contended that this arrangement would not be feasible, urging Türkiye to acknowledge Australia and the Pacific’s strong case to host. He highlighted the dire realities Pacific nations face—experiencing the dire effects of climate change firsthand, including droughts and sea-level rise. “Hopefully, Türkiye can understand how important this is to the Pacific,” Whipps stated.

Previously, Australia’s Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen has indicated robust support from Pacific nations for Australia’s bid, stating that the Pacific is backing the initiative despite Türkiye’s ongoing bid complicating matters. Multiple proposals have been presented to Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, aiming for a resolution that allows Australia to retain the COP31 presidency.

The prospect of co-hosting COP31 is seen as a significant opportunity for the region, potentially acting as a platform to drive investments in clean energy and enhance regional collaboration in addressing climate action. The Pacific Islands Forum has endorsed Australia’s ambitions, framing the summit as an essential opportunity to elevate regional priorities on a global scale.

Additionally, COP31 represents not just a venue for discussions but a vital chance for Australia to reinforce its climate leadership while addressing the pressing issues faced by vulnerable island nations. The themes of unity and regional cooperation underscore the hope that tangible progress in climate diplomacy can lead to effective actions against climate risks.

While there are existing tensions and political divisions surrounding Australia’s hosting bid, there remains a collective aspiration among Pacific leaders and advocates that this initiative will promote meaningful climate action, fostering resilience and sustainability for the region amidst an escalating climate crisis.
