Pacific Public Service Bets on Youth to Shape Tomorrow

The 2025 Pacific Public Service Leaders Conference taking place in Suva has emphasized the crucial importance of cultivating the next generation of public servants. Filimoni Vosarogo, the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, voiced a compelling argument for empowering youth, asserting that resilient and future-ready public services must be able to adapt to the ever-changing needs of Pacific communities.

Vosarogo remarked, “There is a time to be mentored and a time to mentor. I urge each one of you to invest in those who will come after you, ensuring that the mana and indeed the wisdom of your leadership endures before your time in office.” This call to action suggests that senior officials should actively prepare emerging leaders to uphold the legacy of collective leadership that has been fostered in the Pacific region.

The conference, themed “Winds of Change: Reimagining Public Service in the Blue Pacific Continent,” underscores the need for modernizing institutions while maintaining the unique cultural identity intrinsic to the Pacific. This theme resonates with the ongoing dialogues about leadership and community responsibility seen in previous events, such as the recent FONO 2025, which gathered Heads of Public Service from 16 Pacific Island nations to share insights and strategies for developing responsive governance frameworks.

The commitment to youth development was also echoed in initiatives highlighted during the conference and previous gatherings, such as the Vanua Leadership Diploma Programme introduced by Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, intended to blend traditional leadership principles with modern governance skills.

As discussions continue, the essential focus on youth empowerment at the conference signals a hopeful commitment to fostering a new generation of leaders equipped to navigate the challenges faced by the region. Through collaboration and mentorship, there is optimism that the future of public service in the Pacific will harness the capabilities and aspirations of the youth, ultimately contributing to the betterment of communities across the continent.
