Pacific Polytech has officially received full registration as a higher education institution in Fiji, as confirmed by the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF). Dr. Eci Tekuru Naisele, the HECF director, announced that the institution secured full registration in August 2025, after initially operating under provisional status since November 2022.
According to Dr. Naisele, Pacific Polytech has satisfied all academic, governance, and financial requirements established by the commission for higher education institutions. This registration is an essential criterion for accessing government grant funding, which Pacific Polytech has successfully qualified for and received, with the Ministry of Finance’s backing.
Typically, institutions applying for government grants undergo rigorous vetting by the HECF. However, in this case, the review process was conducted directly by the Ministry of Finance. During its regulatory oversight, the HECF identified some compliance issues within Pacific Polytech’s programs and funding processes, many of which have already been rectified.
Dr. Naisele also noted that the HECF is prepared to respect a recommendation from the Standing Committee on Social Affairs regarding an investigation into Pacific Polytech’s funding. The commission asserts its independence and adherence to the Higher Education Act of 2008, ensuring all its actions are aligned with regulatory standards.
Moreover, the HECF possesses the authority to impose penalties on institutions that fail to maintain compliance. This includes the potential for fines, prosecutions, or even closure of non-compliant institutions. The commission emphasizes its commitment to accountability and transparency in the management of public funds. The Grant Management System is utilized to monitor and report on the financial aspects and outcomes of funded programs.
Through regular quarterly monitoring, which necessitates acquittal reports reviewed by the Ministry of Education prior to the disbursement of additional funds, the HECF demonstrates its dedication to upholding quality standards in Fiji’s higher education landscape. This ensures both transparency and accountability in the utilization of government grants for educational institutions.
