Fiji’s Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, participated in his inaugural Pacific Island Chiefs of Policing Executive Leadership Team (ELT) meeting in Brisbane, Australia, where important strategies for regional security were discussed. The agenda included the new Strategic Plan for 2025-2029, the Operating Model, the Pacific Transnational Crime Network, and the Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI). These discussions aim to navigate the key policing priorities within the Pacific region moving forward.

The meeting, held at the Pinkenba Hub, provided attendees an opportunity to gain insights into the training and development resources available through the Australian Federal Police, which supports both the Pacific Policing Initiative and Project Blue Pacific. Tudravu reaffirmed Fiji’s dedication to enhancing police services aimed at addressing regional security interests, particularly concerning the increasingly pressing threats posed by transnational crime in the Pacific.

The Pacific Policing Initiative, described as “By the Pacific, For the Pacific,” seeks to strengthen law enforcement capabilities across the region, ensuring safer communities. This initiative resonates with the Pacific Islands Forum’s vision for sustainable peace and security, as detailed in its 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.

Previous endorsements from Pacific leaders have emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in improving regional policing frameworks, with support from nations including Palau, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga. The PPI also aims to establish regional Centers of Excellence for police training and a Pacific Police Support Group (PPSG) to enhance operational readiness and mutual assistance among the nations during crises.

With Australia pledging significant funding to assist these initiatives, there is a sense of optimism regarding the future of policing in the Pacific. Such collaborative efforts indicate a commitment to enhancing safety and security, while fostering stronger ties among the diverse nations of the Pacific.

It is hoped that continued dedication to training, collaboration, and strategic planning will lead to more effective policing and a safer environment for all communities in the region.
