Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged Pacific leaders and police officers in the Micronesian region, particularly from Kiribati, to utilize the police recruitment training programs being offered in Fiji. Speaking at the recent CHOGM 2024 Pacific Policing Event in Samoa, Mr. Rabuka noted that this opportunity is available not only to Kiribati but also to other small island nations interested in training in Fiji.
“My initial approach was to invite our brothers and sisters in Micronesia, especially Kiribati, to return to the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF). We proposed to their Prime Minister that we could send training teams from the Fiji Police to assist with their police forces,” he stated. He added that some island police forces have already been sending their recruits to train in Fiji.
“This offer remains open not only to Kiribati but also to any other islands that wish to take advantage of the training opportunities available in Fiji,” he continued.
Mr. Rabuka highlighted that Fiji’s security forces have trained alongside special forces and military services in the United States, which enables Fiji to send recruits abroad for further training. He mentioned that a friend of his has an institution in the U.S. that has permitted the inclusion of Fiji’s security forces in its training programs, and he intends to keep that opportunity available.
The Prime Minister will visit Noumea, New Caledonia today, along with three other Pacific leaders, as part of the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum’s initiative for leaders to visit countries that have experienced civil unrest earlier this year.
