Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged Pacific leaders and police officers in the Micronesian region, particularly from Kiribati, to take advantage of police recruit training being offered in Fiji.
During his keynote address at the recent CHOGM 2024 Pacific Policing Event in Samoa, Mr. Rabuka emphasized that this opportunity is not limited to Kiribati but extends to other small island nations interested in training in Fiji.
“My first initiative was to encourage our Micronesian brothers and sisters, especially those from Kiribati, to return to the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF). We offered their Prime Minister the possibility of sending training teams from the Fiji Police to assist with their police force,” he stated. He added that some island police forces have already sent their recruits to train in Fiji.
Mr. Rabuka reiterated that the offer for training still stands for Kiribati and any other interested islands. He noted that Fiji’s security forces receive training alongside special forces and military services in the United States, which facilitates the opportunity for Fiji to send recruits abroad.
“A colleague of mine has a training institution there, and he has permitted me to send our security personnel to train with them, and we will maintain that opportunity,” he explained. He also mentioned that VIP security personnel or police protection officers interested in training options could benefit from this established relationship.
In addition, the Prime Minister announced that he would be attending meetings in Noumea, New Caledonia, with three other Pacific leaders as part of the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum’s initiative to support countries affected by civil unrest earlier this year.
