Over 100 musicians from across the Pacific convened in Port Moresby for the inaugural Pacific Police Tattoo, a unique blend of music and law enforcement celebration held at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium. This significant event, which featured performances from police bands representing various Pacific nations including Australia, Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga, showcased both the talents of the musicians and the strength of camaraderie within regional policing.
Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary Commissioner David Manning commended the participating musicians for their dedication to both their art and the policing profession. He stated, “This event has not only deepened the bonds between our organisations, but it has also demonstrated the strength of regional policing partnerships in action.”
The Royal Tongan Police Band took home the award for top performance, while the Samoa band won the hearts of the audience. The Fiji Police Force Band was noted for embodying the spirit of the event, and the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary excelled in drill performance.
Superintendent Siosaia Mohenoa of the Tonga Police, reflecting on the gathering’s significance, emphasized their mission of sharing musical talent to foster connections with fellow Pacific police band members. “We feel honoured and grateful. But first of all, and most importantly, we give thanks to God,” he said.
Assisted by the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the event united musicians from nine police bands, promoting collaboration and cultural exchange among law enforcement agencies. AFP Assistant Commissioner Nigel Ryan highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships through such events, noting that the Tattoo blends police tradition with Pacific music, enhancing ties that extend beyond merely policing functions.
The Tattoo not only celebrated cultural expressions through music but also reinforced the collaborative spirit among police forces in the Pacific, showcasing a commitment to cooperation, safety, and regional solidarity. Such initiatives inspire hope for an ongoing partnership aimed at enhancing community safety and cultural appreciation within the Pacific region.
