Pacific Police Leaders Forge Global Ties at IACP Conference

Fiji’s Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, participated in the esteemed 2025 International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Conference in Denver, Colorado, held from October 18 to 21. As the largest global gathering of law enforcement professionals, the conference drew over 35,000 leaders from 189 countries, united under the theme “Above and Beyond” to exchange insights and explore new strategies to enhance public safety.

Commissioner Tudravu’s engagement alongside other Pacific policing leaders, including chiefs from Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Palau, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu, underscored the ongoing commitment to fortifying regional and global partnerships in law enforcement. This collaboration is pivotal as it seeks to address shared security challenges and promote innovative policing strategies throughout the Pacific region.

Key sessions at the conference featured presentations from the New York Police Department (NYPD) that focused on pressing issues such as extremism, youth engagement, the implications of artificial intelligence, and the phenomenon of deepfakes. These topics are especially relevant as law enforcement agencies increasingly navigate complex societal changes fuelled by technology and shifting social dynamics.

The Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police (PICP) emphasized that the conference reaffirmed the region’s dedication to collective effort, innovation, and leadership within the policing community. A statement from PICP captured this spirit: “Together, we stand for a safer, more connected Pacific,” highlighting the importance of collaboration in addressing the rising security threats faced across Pacific nations.

Tudravu’s participation comes in the context of broader efforts within the Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI) and aligns with previous regional gatherings aimed at fostering police cooperation and strategic dialogue among member nations. Earlier this year, Fiji Police focused on issues such as transnational crime and climate-related challenges, stressing the importance of unified responses to increasingly complex security landscapes.

The synergy created through these international discussions represents hope for more robust strategies that not only improve policing methods but also fortify community safety across the Pacific. The commitment to regional collaboration and innovation in policing reflects a positive trajectory for law enforcement agencies, ultimately enhancing the security and resilience of communities throughout the Pacific region.
