Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele recently engaged in a significant bilateral meeting with Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister James Marape at the Honiara Summit 2025. This meeting was focused on reinforcing the strong ties and collaborative governance goals between the two nations, particularly as they address evolving regional challenges.
During their discussions, Prime Minister Manele expressed his condolences to PM Marape and the people of Papua New Guinea in light of the passing of former Prime Minister Sir Julius Chan, whose contributions to the nation’s development were acknowledged as impactful and noteworthy. Manele highlighted the long-standing historical and cultural connections that exist between the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, which transcend colonial borders.
In a display of goodwill and solidarity, Manele accepted an invitation to join PNG’s upcoming 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations on September 16 in Port Moresby. He also reiterated Solomon Islands’ respect for PNG’s sovereignty, specifically regarding the political situation in Bougainville, emphasizing a stance of non-interference.
The two leaders recognized the significance of their economic partnerships, with PM Marape expressing appreciation for the presence of over 50 PNG companies operating in various sectors such as hospitality, banking, telecommunications, and agriculture within the Solomon Islands. To enhance bilateral cooperation, they agreed to formalize annual meetings between senior officials and to hold biannual meetings of their heads of state.
