Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has called upon Pacific nations to expedite the resolution of outstanding maritime boundaries and advance complete ocean management. Highlighting the significance of this endeavor for sovereignty and regional security, Manele emphasized the need to protect the region’s Blue Pacific future. The Prime Minister made these remarks at an event focused on finalizing maritime boundaries and progressing towards 100 percent ocean management.

Currently, 36 out of the Pacific’s 48 shared maritime boundaries have been resolved, leaving 25 percent still pending. Manele underscored the risks these unresolved boundaries pose to sovereign rights and resource management. He urged for decisive actions to settle the remaining boundaries and advance the 19 Extended Continental Shelf submissions. Manele congratulated the Marshall Islands and Kiribati on ratifying their maritime boundary treaty, which underscores a commitment to international law and ocean management goals.

The collaboration between Vanuatu’s Torba Province and the Solomon Islands’ Temotu Province under the Motalava Boundary Treaty exemplifies successful ocean management through partnership. Manele emphasized the importance of progress, unity, and Pacific solidarity in achieving comprehensive ocean management. He acknowledged the support of regional organizations and development partners, including Australia, the UK, and the EU.

This regional push for resolution and unity aligns with broader themes previously discussed at the Pacific Islands Forum. Past events emphasized Pacific leadership in maintaining healthy tuna stocks and advancing sustainable fisheries—key components of the region’s economic and environmental well-being.

Overall, these efforts reflect a strong regional commitment to addressing ocean governance challenges collaboratively. As Pacific nations strive towards complete ocean management, they reinforce hopes for securing a sustainable and prosperous future for the Blue Pacific Continent. The path forward involves not only finalizing maritime boundaries but also ensuring that these agreements support sustainable development and regional stability.
