The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Prof. Biman Prasad, emphasized the urgent need for enhanced research capabilities to combat climate change during the Global Development Conference 2024 at the University of the South Pacific in Suva. He highlighted that small Pacific states, along with the global community, must elevate their efforts in climate finance and adaptation initiatives.
Prof. Prasad stated that robust research is crucial to inform policy decisions and challenge traditional methods of approach to climate issues. He pointed out the growing importance of credible science and knowledge in these uncertain times, where misinformation and disruptions caused by technological advances can undermine trust in scientific research.
He called for collaboration among researchers within the Global Development Network (GDN) to restore public confidence in research outcomes and encouraged scholars to effectively communicate their findings to a skeptical audience. He expressed a particular hope that future research would concentrate on ocean studies and the development of a sustainable blue economy, which are vital for the livelihoods of Pacific communities.
Prof. Prasad stressed the necessity of building resilience against climate change impacts, noting that addressing these challenges is critical for future sustainability, especially in the face of mounting pressures on public funding and escalating debt levels.
The call for innovative research and action demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing climate change challenges in the Pacific and reinforces the importance of science-based policy making.
This article reminds us of the critical role of research in informing effective climate action and the need for collaboration to foster trust in scientific knowledge. With concerted efforts, the Pacific region can not only safeguard its environment but also empower its communities through sustainable practices.
