Thirty swimmers are set to participate in the upcoming Pacific Mini Games trials at the Damodar Aquatic Centre in Suva this Saturday. The information was confirmed by team manager Cheyanne Rova, who emphasized that all swimmers are well aware of the selection criteria and are diligently working towards meeting those standards.
Rova expressed her hopes of assembling a robust team capable of earning medals at the Mini Games. She noted, “Everyone’s been preparing hard, and it’s showing in the time they’ve been producing since the start of the year.” The goal is to select a total of 16 swimmers, comprising eight girls and eight boys. Notably, approximately 50 percent of the selected athletes will be under the age of 18, in line with guidelines from the Pacific Games council.
Excitement surrounds the trials as Rova anticipates impressive performances from the swimmers. This will be her first experience as a team manager after transitioning from an athlete role. She plans to encourage respect and a strong work ethic among the young swimmers as they prepare for competition.
Rova highlighted the extended team list of about 30 swimmers who will compete in the trials, which are to be conducted in a short course format. This event is part of the lead-up to the Pacific Mini Games, scheduled to take place in Palau from June 29 to July 9.
The spirit and commitment witnessed among Fiji’s swimmers reflect the ongoing dedication to enhancing the nation’s profile in regional sports. As these young athletes prepare for the trials, their efforts inspire optimism and hope for successful representation at the Mini Games and beyond.
