Palau is poised to host the largest Pacific Mini Games to date, with participation from around 1,200 athletes and 200 technical staff representing 24 Pacific nations across 14 sports. The Palau Games Organising Committee announced the plans in a press conference, emphasizing that they are fully prepared as the opening event is only 80 days away.
Dr. Patrick Tellei, the Committee Chairman, assured attendees of the event’s readiness. Venues across the island nation are at various completion stages, with significant progress made on key facilities. The Palau Track & Field stadium, designated for the opening and closing ceremonies, is almost finished, and athletes have already begun training on the completed track. Other notable venues, like the Palau Nippon Stadium for baseball and the Meyuns Softball Field, are nearing completion as well.
While awaiting final touches on several venues, including the Va’a venue and Melekeok Baseball Field for archery events, the Palau National Pool is complete, with additional works ongoing for restroom facilities. An exciting aspect of this year’s Games is that the Pacific Ocean will serve as an official warm-up pool for swimming events, set to boast the largest warm-up facility for this edition of the Games.
As preparations continue, accommodations have been arranged for international athletes across multiple schools in Koror, ensuring that the experience will be both comfortable and enriching. Meals will be served at the Palau Community College cafeteria, designated as the official dining venue catering to athletes and officials alike.
Approximately $5 million has been allocated towards upgrading the sports venues and athlete accommodations, with significant community support reflected through private sector donations and public funding. These developments herald not only a monumental event for Palau, which last hosted the Pacific Mini Games nearly two decades ago, but also foster unity and pride within the Pacific region.
Athletes from Palau and other participating nations are looking ahead with optimism as they prepare to showcase their skills. This event represents a significant opportunity for local athletes to compete on an international stage, and the excitement around the Games is palpable. The collaborative spirit of preparation reflects the region’s commitment to sports and community engagement.
As the Pacific Mini Games draw closer, the anticipation for unity, competition, and athlete camaraderie grows stronger, showcasing the dedication and resilience of the Pacific nations involved.
