Professor Sir Collin Tukuitonga, an alumnus of the Fiji School of Medicine, has emphasized the need for a significant transformation in medical education to keep pace with the rapidly changing health scenario in the Pacific. His remarks came during the 140th Anniversary Inaugural Alumni Ball of the Fiji School of Medicine (FSM), where he addressed the profound social, demographic, and health changes impacting the region.

Sir Tukuitonga pointed out that the evolving disease burden, particularly non-communicable diseases, requires a healthcare workforce that is adaptable and prepared for contemporary challenges. He argued for a reevaluation of the region’s healthcare workforce strategy, urging a dialogue about future workforce requirements while acknowledging the continued importance of traditional roles like doctors and nurses.

The event also saw Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, Fiji’s Minister for Health, encouraging medical students to maintain dedication in their studies. He reassured that FSM would continue to improve its training programs to better address current health demands.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, FSM launched a Memorial E-Book, capturing the school’s historical achievements, leadership, and notable alumni contributions. This project aims to inspire future generations of medical professionals.

The call for transformation aligns with discussions from similar events and initiatives in the region. Recently, health sector reforms have been a focus in the Pacific, addressing challenges like health worker shortages and systemic healthcare pressures exacerbated by non-communicable diseases and limited resources. Collaborative efforts, such as those between the University of Fiji and other health institutions, reinforce the ongoing push towards innovative training and improved health services across the Pacific.

Overall, Sir Collin Tukuitonga’s address underscores a crucial turning point for medical education in the Pacific, advocating for a forward-thinking approach to building a resilient and responsive healthcare workforce that can effectively meet the region’s dynamic health challenges.
