Pacific Leaders Urged: Save Our Islands, Save the World!

Baron Waqa, the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, emphasized at COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, that climate change is the most pressing existential threat facing Pacific Island nations. He expressed that rising sea levels in the Pacific are jeopardizing lives, cultures, and traditions, urging global leaders to act decisively.

Waqa stated, “We save the Pacific; we save the world. Let us not leave here with the future of our Blue Planet hanging in the balance.” He highlighted the importance of the 1.5-degree Celsius target outlined in the Paris Agreement, calling it crucial to the survival of Pacific communities.

He urged for substantial and timely climate finance to support small island developing states, emphasizing the need for accessible funding that reflects their unique challenges. The Pacific Resilience Facility, a project aimed at facilitating access to climate finance, is set to launch in 2026, with Waqa recognizing the generosity of partners who have committed to supporting this initiative.
