Pacific Leaders Unite to Tackle Labour Challenges at Nadi Conference

The 2024 Public Service International (PSI) Oceania Sub-Regional Advisory Committee Conference is currently taking place in Nadi, aiming to promote a collaborative approach to tackle labor-related issues and capitalize on growth opportunities in the Pacific region.

Parmesh Chand, the Permanent Secretary for Civil Service and Public Enterprise, emphasized the significance of the conference during its official opening this morning. He noted that 50 participants from six Pacific Island nations are gathering to engage in discussions and share ideas aimed at enhancing the working conditions in their respective countries.

Chand stated that the conference will focus keenly on several key areas, including climate justice, labor migration, insourcing, the fight against privatization, the empowerment of indigenous workers, adherence to International Labour Organization (ILO) standards, as well as capacity building and organizing initiatives.

He also mentioned that the government has introduced various measures to tackle labor migration and other related challenges within the Civil Service. These initiatives include the elimination of contractual conditions in favor of tenure service and a significant salary adjustment, which includes pay increases ranging from 7 to 20 percent. Additionally, the government has launched an Internship and Graduate Trainee program aimed at helping qualified individuals address existing skills gaps.

Chand revealed that the Ministry of Civil Service is in the process of reviewing its General Orders to enhance the employment terms and conditions for civil servants. He expressed optimism about the future of work in Fiji, noting that the tripartite mechanisms are now fully operational, and strategies are being developed as part of a new National Development Plan.

Chand reiterated that Fiji is well-positioned to meet ILO standards and implement best practices. This year’s conference also includes participation from youth representatives from member countries of the Oceania Sub-Regional Advisory Committee Conference (OSRAC).
