Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is leading a delegation on an observational visit to New Caledonia, which began on Sunday, October 27, and will continue until today. This visit follows the decisions made by Pacific leaders during the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) meeting held earlier this year in Tonga. The delegation includes notable figures such as PIF chairperson and Tongan Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown, and Solomon Islands Foreign Affairs and External Trade Minister Peter-Shanel Agovaka.
Mr. Rabuka emphasized that this mission is strictly observational, as per the request of the New Caledonian government. He stated, “We are here to respectfully observe and engage under agreed terms of reference, as endorsed by the French State, the Government of New Caledonia, and the Forum.”
Upon their arrival, the leaders were taken to areas in Noumea that suffered significant damage during recent unrest, including a public hospital and a commercial center. The delegation also held discussions with Louis Le Frenc, the High Commissioner of France to New Caledonia, as well as with the President and members of the Customary Senate and the President of Congress. These meetings aimed to gather insights on the current situation and explore potential pathways for the future of New Caledonia.
This diplomatic effort reflects a commitment to understanding and supporting New Caledonia during a challenging time, emphasizing cooperation among Pacific nations. As the region confronts various challenges, such enumerative visits can foster dialogue and contribute to a more stable and peaceful future for the island and its residents.
Overall, the engagement of regional leaders underscores a unified approach to addressing the complexities faced by New Caledonia and demonstrates a commitment to peaceful resolutions and collaborative governance in the Pacific Islands.
