The Prime Minister of Tonga and Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum, Dr. ‘Aisake Eke, met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to strengthen the Pacific Islands Forum’s shared agenda on critical global matters such as climate change and sustainable economic growth. The meeting reinforced the partnership showcased during Guterres’ visit to Tonga for the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in 2024, emphasizing the urgency of Pacific-led climate initiatives, particularly at COP29.

Dr. Eke underscored the Forum’s commitment to advancing a resilient and sustainable Blue Pacific, recognizing the importance of the UN as a crucial ally. He noted, “The Pacific Islands Forum values the United Nations as a vital partner in our collective vision… We are committed to working together to drive urgent climate action and ensure that the Blue Pacific’s priorities remain on the global stage.”

The discussions highlighted the need for increased ambition, solidarity, and collaboration in upcoming global forums, such as the UN General Assembly, particularly following the leaders’ meeting in the Solomon Islands set for September 2025. This proactive stance reflects the Forum’s dedication to addressing pressing regional challenges while also advocating for international support adaptable to the unique vulnerabilities of the Pacific.

In addition to elevating the Pacific Islands Forum’s stance on global issues, the meeting highlighted the ongoing desire for a strategic approach to navigate the complexities of climate change and sustainable development, building upon previous gatherings, like the Special Forum Economic Ministers Meeting (FEMM). These efforts aim to unify Pacific nations to tackle overarching economic challenges and forge a sustainable path forward amidst global uncertainties.

Continuing with hope and resilience, the dialogues among Pacific leaders place them in a vital role to shape a sustainable future as they advocate for enhanced international cooperation. By fostering unity and a collective voice, the Pacific Islands Forum illuminates the path forward in the face of challenges, reinforcing a hopeful outlook for the region’s climate initiatives and sustainable development goals.
