Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has revealed that senior officials recently met to finalize his “Oceans of Peace” concept, which he aims to present at the upcoming Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Honiara, Solomon Islands. He confirmed that the initiative is no longer under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has now transitioned to the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.
Rabuka expressed his hope that the policy paper will be adopted and celebrated as a significant step towards ensuring peace and cooperation across the Pacific nations. He emphasized the interconnectedness of Pacific nations through their shared ocean, stating, “It is our responsibility to ensure it remains a region of peace that fosters regional cooperation.”
The Prime Minister articulated that this concept represents the “Pacific Way,” a philosophy that advocates for peace and recognition of the people’s rights to security, reflecting a collective commitment to strengthening international peace. He believes that this initiative can serve as a beacon of hope, driving forward the region’s ongoing strive for peace and prosperity.
Previously, during his address at the UN General Assembly in 2023, Rabuka first introduced the idea of the Pacific as a Zone of Peace. The development of this framework aligns with proactive efforts by Pacific leaders to address issues affecting regional stability, including drug-related crime.
The collaboration with the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat is critical as it aims to draft a declaration promoting peace and security that will be reviewed and potentially endorsed at the 54th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting scheduled for 2025.
This initiative holds promise as it seeks to transcend cultural and geographical diversities within the Blue Pacific region, fostering a spirit of unity among Pacific nations for a secure future. With the international community’s support, this vision could pave the way for enhanced cooperation and stability in the region.
