Forum Leaders have committed to advancing efforts aimed at extracting greater economic returns from the region’s fisheries and have also backed a new regional declaration on kava. Leaders praised ongoing initiatives like the Pacific Islands Tuna that work to enhance market access for regional fisheries products. They pledged to bolster the region’s capacity in value chain production to elevate economic returns from fisheries.

The leaders recognized the significance of the U.S Tuna Treaty, noting the annual Economic Assistance Agreement payment of US$60 million for 2024. They expressed support for continuous engagement with the U.S. to ensure the annual payment for 2025. Additionally, updates on aquaculture development across the region were welcomed.

A concerted focus was placed on kava, with leaders endorsing its dual cultural and economic value. The need for a cohesive approach to its recognition and trade was emphasized. The leaders acknowledged a regional Declaration on Kava that highlights its Pacific origins and cultural heritage, while also recognizing its economic potential as a shared asset.

The Forum Secretariat has been tasked with further consultations to align member states around this kava declaration, with formal consideration slated for the 2026 Leaders’ Meeting. This emphasizes a coordinated approach in promoting kava’s cultural roots and commercial opportunities, ensuring that it thrives in global markets while preserving its traditional significance.

The renewed commitment to fisheries and kava showcases the leaders’ dedication to sustainable economic development and cultural preservation. By enhancing market access and fostering trade cooperation, regional leaders are poised to secure economic resilience and cultural viability in the Pacific. The continuous dialogue and strategic development of resources such as fisheries and kava reflect a hopeful outlook for balancing tradition with modern economic demands.
