Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently on a visit to New Caledonia from October 27, which was arranged following the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) meeting held in Tonga earlier this year. The delegation, led by PIF chairperson and Tongan Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, also includes the Prime Minister of the Cook Islands, Mark Brown, and the Solomon Islands’ Foreign Affairs and External Trade Minister, Peter-Shanel Agovaka.
Mr. Rabuka emphasized that this mission is strictly observational, as per the request of the New Caledonian government. He noted, “We are here to respectfully observe and engage under agreed terms of reference, as endorsed by the French State, the Government of New Caledonia, and the Forum.”
Upon their arrival, the visiting leaders were shown areas in Noumea that suffered significant damage from recent unrest, including a public hospital and a commercial center. The leaders engaged with the High Commissioner of France to New Caledonia, Louis Le Frenc, as well as the President and members of the Customary Senate and the President of Congress, to gather insights on the current situation and discuss potential pathways forward for the region.
This visit underscores a collaborative spirit among Pacific nations to support one another during challenging times, highlighting an ongoing commitment to peace and stability in the region. It is a hopeful sign that through dialogue and partnership, the leaders aim to foster a more stable and prosperous New Caledonia.
