The Tongan Crown Prince, Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala, recently called upon Pacific leaders to broaden their understanding of peace during the 2025 Pacific Regional and National Security Conference held in Suva, Fiji. He emphasized the importance of a unified vision for the Pacific, highlighting that defining peace should extend beyond mere security considerations to encompass a holistic view of community well-being.

During the conference, Crown Prince Tupouto’a expressed that conceptualizing the region as an “Ocean of Peace” is crucial. “If you say security, we might be thinking about human security, climate change, but if you say peace, we understand what you mean,” he stated. This perspective implies a shift in how leaders frame regional strategies, advocating for a comprehensive definition of peace that considers the future for generations to come.

The Crown Prince was a part of a prominent panel that included leaders from Niue, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands. He pointed out the necessity for Pacific nations to delve deeper into their understanding of peace, underlining that “Our security role is to secure our future.” He advocated for development initiatives aimed at ensuring a better life for future generations.

Minister for Police, Paula Piukala, attended alongside other leaders, and discussions at the conference are expected to influence the agenda for the upcoming Forum Leaders Meeting.

In light of previously articulated views, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has consistently highlighted the interconnected nature of security in the Pacific, linking it to community empowerment, regional cooperation, and an overarching commitment to peace. Initiatives like the “Ocean of Peace” emphasize not just the defense against threats, but also the importance of development and harmony among Pacific nations.

This fosters a positive atmosphere for ongoing collaboration. As regional leaders emphasize unity and shared values, the calls for enhanced dialogue and cooperative efforts signal a hopeful outlook for a resilient future in the Pacific, one that can effectively address the challenges posed by climate change, economic instability, and geopolitical tensions.

Overall, the concerted efforts for a peaceful Pacific signal a promising narrative towards collaboration, shared prosperity, and a commitment to safeguarding the unique identities and futures of the nations within the region.
