A delegation of leaders from the Forum Troika, which includes Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka of Fiji, is currently in New Caledonia for a fact-finding mission. Led by Forum Chair and Tonga Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni, the group also includes Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown and Solomon Islands Foreign Affairs Minister Peter-Shanel Ago-vaka.
The leaders arrived to survey areas around Noumea that suffered significant damage due to recent unrest, including a public hospital and a commercial center. They engaged with key local figures such as Louis Le Franc, the High Commissioner of France to New Caledonia, as well as members of the Customary Senate and the Congress of New Caledonia. These meetings aimed to gather insights on the current situation and discuss pathways for future stability.
Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized on social media that the visit is observational in nature, as per the request of the New Caledonian government. He reaffirmed that the discussions are conducted respectfully and in accordance with the agreed Terms of Reference, which have been sanctioned by the French State and New Caledonia’s government following the unrest that took place in May.
