Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently visiting New Caledonia from October 27 to October 30, as part of a delegation mandated by Pacific leaders during the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) meeting held in Tonga earlier this year. The visiting team is led by the PIF chairperson and Tongan Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni and includes Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown and Solomon Islands Foreign Affairs and External Trade Minister Peter-Shanel Agovaka.
During this strictly observational visit, which was requested by the Government of New Caledonia, Mr. Rabuka emphasized the delegation’s objective to respectfully observe and engage in discussions following guidelines endorsed by the French State, the Government of New Caledonia, and the Forum. Upon their arrival, the leaders toured Noumea, surveying areas that had been significantly affected by recent unrest, including a public hospital and a commercial center.
They also met with the High Commissioner of France to New Caledonia, Louis Le Frenc, and engaged with members of the Customary Senate and the Congress President to gain insights into the current situation and explore possible paths forward for New Caledonia.
This visit reflects collaborative efforts among Pacific nations to address regional issues and ensures constructive dialogue, presenting an opportunity for positive developments in New Caledonia’s socio-political landscape.
Overall, this mission not only highlights the importance of unity among Pacific Island nations but also signifies a commitment to peace and recovery in areas affected by turmoil.
