Ten leaders from Pacific Island nations are currently in China attending the 3rd China-Pacific Islands Countries Foreign Ministers meeting, which is taking place in Xiamen City, Fujian Province. Fiji’s delegation is led by Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister and Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Lenora Qereqeretabua.

This important two-day meeting is being chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, along with Kiribati’s president as co-chair. According to a spokesperson from China’s Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning, the meeting represents a significant opportunity for comprehensive strategic partnership discussions, focusing on mutual respect and collaborative development.

Notably, this meeting marks the first time it has been held in China, emphasizing the growing significance of China-Pacific relations. The agenda includes in-depth discussions on various issues of mutual concern and potential cooperation between China and the Pacific Island nations.

Prior similar events have illustrated Fiji’s consistent focus on enhancing its diplomatic and cooperative efforts with China, especially under the leadership of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who has been vocal about fostering sustainable partnerships. Recognizing the long-standing ties between Fiji and China—having established diplomatic relations nearly 50 years ago—this meeting could further strengthen those connections and open doors for future collaborations in areas such as trade, infrastructure, and cultural exchange.

As discussions unfold, it remains hopeful that such engagements will pave the way for increased cooperation, ultimately contributing to regional stability and shared progress for the Pacific Islands.
