Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has embarked on a significant observational mission in New Caledonia from October 27 to today, a visit requested by Pacific leaders following the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) meeting held in Tonga earlier this year.
Leading the delegation is Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, the Prime Minister of Tonga and current chairperson of PIF. The team also includes the Prime Minister of the Cook Islands, Mark Brown, and the Solomon Islands Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Peter-Shanel Agovaka.
Mr. Rabuka emphasized that the purpose of the visit is strictly observational, as requested by the Government of New Caledonia. He stated, “We are here to respectfully observe and engage under agreed terms of reference, as endorsed by the French State, the Government of New Caledonia, and the Forum.”
On arrival, leaders assessed various areas in Noumea that have suffered significant damage due to recent unrest, including a public hospital and a commercial center. They also engaged with the High Commissioner of France to New Caledonia, Louis Le Frenc, along with leaders from the Customary Senate and President of the Congress, to gather insights on the current situation and discuss potential pathways forward for New Caledonia.
This visit reflects a collaborative approach by Pacific leaders to support New Caledonia during a challenging time, hopefully fostering dialogue and peace in the region.
