A high-level Forum Troika Plus Mission will be conducted in New Caledonia from October 27 to 29, following a directive from Forum Leaders during the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum meeting in Tonga in August. This mission, which is strictly observational as requested by the government of New Caledonia, will adhere to the agreed Terms of Reference established in cooperation with the French State and the government of New Caledonia.
The mission will be led by the PIFS Chairperson and Tongan Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, accompanied by other leaders including Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Additionally, they will be joined by Peter-Shanel Agovaka, the Solomon Islands Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade.
Prime Minister Sovaleni emphasized the region’s commitment to supporting the people of New Caledonia, particularly in the wake of earlier unrest this year. He expressed satisfaction at the opportunity to carry out this important mission, noting its significance following the discussions among leaders last month.
The team’s work will be supported by Secretary General Baron Waqa and senior officials, who will assist under the guidance of the French State and the New Caledonian government. Their itinerary includes a tour of Noumea and meetings with various stakeholders affected by recent turmoil, encompassing local political parties, youth groups, and impacted communities, as well as discussions with sectors including private business, health, and education.
This mission is crucial for addressing the complex political landscape and ongoing social and economic challenges in New Caledonia. By engaging with local perspectives, the Forum aims to foster ongoing dialogue regarding New Caledonia’s future while respecting its current status.
