Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, highlighted the urgent need for reforms to address the challenges posed by climate change during a meeting with Omar Shehadeh, the UAE Special Envoy to the Pacific. Prasad pointed out the alarming vulnerability of the Pacific, which includes six of the world’s top 20 disaster-prone countries.

He noted that, despite the pressing needs, the region receives a mere US$220 million each year in climate financing, significantly lower than the estimated US$2 billion required for effective climate adaptation and the shift to renewable energy sources. Professor Prasad reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to the goals of COP28, including a target to reduce emissions by 43 percent by the year 2030 and to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

Moreover, he expressed appreciation for the UAE’s assistance in renewable energy initiatives and education, signaling a hopeful outlook for ongoing collaboration to confront the urgent climate challenges faced by the Pacific region.

This meeting underscores the essential dialogue and partnerships needed to tackle climate change effectively. With nations like Fiji taking a proactive stance and seeking support from others, there is optimism that collaborative efforts will pave the way for significant progress in climate adaptation and sustainability in the Pacific.
