The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has urgently appealed to donor partners, investors, and larger nations to support the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF). Addressing attendees at the Moana Pavilion during the COP 29 Blue Zone in Baku, Azerbaijan, Prof. Prasad highlighted that the PRF is intended to serve as a self-sustaining financial mechanism, providing consistent and reliable assistance to communities vulnerable to the escalating impacts of climate change.
Prof. Prasad emphasized that the PRF is a Pacific-led initiative designed specifically for the needs of the region. It aims to tackle pressing challenges through innovative, locally-sourced financing solutions that meet the unique circumstances of Pacific communities. According to him, the PRF addresses a significant gap in funding for community-based resilience efforts, which is crucial as climate change continues to threaten livelihoods and ecosystems across the Pacific.
The Deputy Prime Minister also took the opportunity to showcase the progress made by Pacific leaders in establishing the PRF within the regional framework and in their ongoing efforts to connect it with international funding sources. Notably, he pointed out that the PRF was recognized in the decision on loss and damage finance at COP 28, which serves as a testament to its potential as a pioneering model for financing mechanisms designed to handle climate-related damages.
This initiative not only reinforces global awareness of support strategies for the Pacific but also signals a collaborative response to one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate resilience. With continued commitment and partnership, the PRF promises to enhance the adaptive capacities of vulnerable communities, paving the way for a more sustainable future in the face of climate change.
The PRF exemplifies a proactive approach, fostering hope that with increased investment and international collaboration, the Pacific region can strengthen its defenses against climate challenges while inspiring similar initiatives worldwide.
