Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated the purpose of his recent visit to New Caledonia, which took place from October 27 until today, is primarily observational. This visit was mandated by Pacific leaders during the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) meeting held in Tonga earlier this year.
The delegation is being led by the chairperson of the PIF and Prime Minister of Tonga, Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni. Joining them are Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown and Solomon Islands Foreign Affairs and External Trade Minister Peter-Shanel Agovaka.
Mr. Rabuka emphasized that the mission is strictly to observe, as requested by the Government of New Caledonia. He mentioned the importance of respecting the agreed terms of reference, which have been endorsed by the French State, the Government of New Caledonia, and the Forum.
Upon arrival, the leaders were taken to visit areas around Noumea that suffered significant damage due to recent unrest, including a public hospital and a commercial center. They also had important discussions with Louis Le Frenc, the High Commissioner of France to New Caledonia, along with the President and members of the Customary Senate and the President of Congress. These discussions aimed to gather insights on the current situation and explore potential pathways for New Caledonia’s future.
Overall, this initiative shows a commitment to peace and stability in the Pacific region, reflecting an ongoing effort by Pacific leaders to address issues collaboratively and constructively. The hope is that through these observational efforts and dialogues, New Caledonia can find a positive way forward amidst its challenges.
By bringing together regional leaders in this manner, the mission reflects a strong regional unity and a shared commitment to promote solutions that benefit all involved.
