A pioneering Pacific-led initiative, known as Pacific Kids Learning, is revolutionizing education for children by ingeniously combining traditional storytelling with modern technology to preserve cultural identity. Co-founded by Theresa Tupuola, the project involves digitizing and animating cultural narratives, songs, and dances in 12 different languages. This effort has resulted in an interactive library that not only educates young minds but also roots them in their heritage.

“Each story is created in collaboration with grassroots communities, emphasizing the importance of valuing and safeguarding cultural knowledge within families and villages,” Theresa explains. The initiative has grown to include over 300 animations, bridging the gap between tradition and modern-day classroom learning. Moreover, the platform’s recent expansion into virtual reality provides children with an immersive learning experience that goes beyond the digital screen.

Notably, Theresa stresses the importance of relying on elders as custodians of knowledge, referring to them as a “living library” vital to this preservation endeavor. She invites storytellers from across the Pacific to contribute to this cultural archive, aiming for close collaboration to ensure that indigenous wisdom reaches future generations.

The innovative use of technology by Pacific Kids Learning echoes similar initiatives across the Pacific region that seek to adapt and preserve rich cultural heritages through digital formats. For instance, Master Kalisito Vunidilo and Dr. Tarisi Sorovi-Vunidilo have embraced digital storytelling and authored children’s books to make Fijian myths and legends more accessible. Their work emphasizes the necessity of connecting younger generations with their roots, especially for expatriate families.

Concerns surrounding the representation of Pacific cultures in digital formats have also been raised. AI systems like ChatGPT have been scrutinized for their potential to misrepresent the complexities of Pacific languages and history when based predominantly on written narratives, a concern that highlights the importance of integrating traditional oral knowledge with modern technology.

The success of initiatives like Pacific Kids Learning and others in the Pacific region sends a powerful message: innovative technologies can coexist with traditional cultural practices, fostering an environment where past and present intersect harmoniously. By leveraging these tools, there is a hopeful pathway toward preserving cultural identities and ensuring the rich tapestry of Pacific heritage is passed down to inspire future generations.
