The Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) is amplifying demands for the protection of freedom of expression and press freedom throughout the Pacific region. Their advocacy comes in response to a defamation lawsuit initiated by Surangel Whipps Jr.’s father against Island Times Palau, a national newspaper. This legal action, filed by Surangel and Sons on October 29, targets the newspaper’s editor, Leilani Reklai.

During a press conference on October 30, President Whipps Jr. criticized Island Times for allegedly disseminating inaccurate political propaganda. Following these developments, PINA has expressed a commitment to rally support for Reklai, emphasizing the essential role of media in defending democratic values.

Kalafi Moala, the president of PINA, highlighted the importance of media freedom, calling for immediate advancements not just in Palau, but across the entire Pacific. Moala pointed out the troubling trend of increasing hostility towards free speech and the press in some Pacific nations, which he believes is indicative of a broader pattern of intimidation, particularly affecting Palau at this time.

In response to these concerns, PINA has reached out to the office of the President of Palau, stressing that freedom of speech is intrinsically linked to democracy. This message resonates, especially as Palauans have recently participated in elections.

This situation shines a light on the vital need for press freedom in maintaining democratic integrity in the Pacific Islands. Upholding these principles not only ensures a diverse dialogue but also strengthens the foundations of democracy for the future.

Summary: PINA is urging for the protection of press freedom in the Pacific, particularly in light of a defamation lawsuit against Island Times Palau. The association’s president stresses the critical role the media plays in democracy and freedom of expression, calling for regional support and raising alarms over increasing intimidation against media outlets.
