Climate change resilience is a primary objective for Pacific Island nations as they confront its significant consequences. Baron Waqa, the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, highlights that initiatives focused on resilience are essential for the 2050 Strategy and the future of the region.

Waqa emphasizes the importance of external engagement and advocacy being shaped by the 2026 Leaders’ Policy, ensuring that partnerships are in line with regional priorities. This policy is intended to assist both members and partners in implementing climate-related projects efficiently.

“Our focus will be on implementation and enhancing integration across the regional system,” Waqa states. He further adds that along with climate change resilience, economic connectivity and the strengthening of regional frameworks remain vital. Leaders of the Pacific Islands expect a higher degree of collaboration within the regional system, aimed at achieving more effective outcomes.

Waqa expresses optimism about Australia’s commitment to collaborating with Turkey as the President of COP31, a move that could bolster regional climate initiatives. Additionally, Esala Nayasi, Deputy Secretary General of PIFS, stresses the importance of unity among Pacific nations to meet these critical goals.

“The region has faced challenges in maintaining and protecting its unity,” Nayasi points out, suggesting that this remains an area requiring focused attention. He reaffirms that solidarity, as mentioned by Waqa, will continue to be an ongoing effort. Nayasi believes that strong cooperation and unity among Pacific nations will be essential in addressing common challenges and fostering sustainable development moving forward.

The Pacific Island nations are not only addressing the immediate impacts of climate change but are also demonstrating a collective commitment to secure a resilient and prosperous future through collaboration and resilience-building strategies.
