Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship as both a moral duty and a legal obligation during the official opening of the Pacific Islands Expanded Constituency Workshop in Nadi. His remarks highlighted the growing environmental pressures facing the Pacific region, including rising sea levels and the degradation of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, which pose significant threats to livelihoods, infrastructure, and national economies.
Gavoka pointed out the urgency of addressing these challenges, noting that the economies in Fiji and the broader Pacific region heavily depend on nature. He specifically mentioned that tourism, Fiji’s largest export earner, along with aviation as a critical enabler, are intrinsically linked to the health of marine environments, stable weather patterns, and biodiversity preservation.
He explained that every investment in climate adaptation, environmental protection, and sustainable resource management equates to an investment in economic security, connectivity, and national resilience. Furthermore, Gavoka urged that all facets of environmental and climate finance should yield substantial results, calling for an unwavering commitment to this cause.
He stressed that projects must not only enhance institutional frameworks and community well-being but also empower women, youth, and indigenous peoples, ensuring that all major tourism, infrastructure, and aviation developments include climate risk assessments and community consultations to protect both individuals and the environment.
Gavoka reinforced the notion of unity as a crucial strength for the Pacific nations, referencing the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent and advocating for cooperation towards creating a peaceful ocean environment. He urged participants of the workshop to work together to enhance coordination, accelerate implementation, and ensure that Global Environment Facility programming aligns with the unique priorities and aspirations of island nations.
This collective approach reflects a proactive stance toward combating environmental challenges, illustrating a hopeful vision for sustainable development in the Pacific region.
