Mark Brown, chair of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), called on regional Foreign Affairs Ministers gathered in Suva to be self-reliant and not to rely solely on the goodwill of others. In his opening remarks at the 2024 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting, Mr. Brown highlighted the increasing geostrategic interests that the region faces, along with the escalating climate crisis.
“We are continually battling a climate crisis that worsens each year,” he stated. He pointed out the new challenges, including cyber-attacks and transnational crime, and emphasized the need for the region to work collectively to strengthen political solidarity so that they can effectively respond when one of their members requires assistance.
Mr. Brown stressed the significance of unity, emphasizing that it is crucial to not become complacent and to take a more strategic and assertive approach to their collective engagement if they wish to achieve their shared vision for 2050. He encouraged the ministers to ensure that partners align with their priorities and aspirations.
As he nears the end of his tenure, Mr. Brown expressed gratitude for the collaboration he received during his time as chair, thanking the ministers for their support and openness over the past 18 months. He remarked on the honor it has been for him and his government to lead the Forum and acknowledged the ministers for their contributions throughout his chairmanship.
