The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) is set to send an Election Observer Mission to monitor the upcoming snap election in Vanuatu on January 16, 2025. This initiative is led by H.E Junior Aini, the Ambassador of the Republic of the Marshall Islands to Fiji and the Pacific.
PIF Secretary General Baron Waqa has expressed his support for the observation mission and commended the Vanuatu Government and its Electoral Management Body for their invitation to international and domestic observer missions. Waqa emphasized that Vanuatu has consistently opened its doors to observer missions, reflective of its commitment to transparent and democratic processes, particularly during a period of recovery from the recent earthquake.
“It’s uplifting to see Vanuatu’s resilience and commitment to a strong democratic process that aims for positive outcomes for its citizens,” said Waqa. The Forum’s Election Observer Team will conduct their observations on the election day and oversee the counting process. This mission falls under the provisions of the Biketawa Declaration 2000, which underscores the Forum leaders’ dedication to good governance across the region.
The upcoming election comes at a critical time for Vanuatu as it continues to rebuild following significant natural disasters. The presence of the Election Observer Mission symbolizes not just Vanuatu’s commitment to democratic principles but also regional solidarity in supporting member nations during challenging times.
This proactive approach to international oversight is a positive development and highlights the region’s collective efforts towards fostering democracy and stability. Amidst recent setbacks, such initiatives remind us of the strength and resilience of the Pacific Island countries as they work towards a brighter future.
