The Pacific Islands Forum has expressed solidarity with Australia following a tragic shooting that left 15 people dead and 27 wounded at Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday. Baron Waqa, the Secretary-General of the Forum, called the incident shocking and offered heartfelt condolences to the Australian people and government during this time of grief.
Waqa emphasized the importance of respect for all religions and beliefs in fostering unity across the Pacific region. “As a region, our ties are founded on deep bonds of respect and familial relationships,” he stated, highlighting that the challenges faced by one nation resonate throughout the region.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has indicated that the shooting was influenced by Islamic State ideology, marking a somber moment in the nation’s history. It is noteworthy that the attack has been labeled the worst mass shooting in Australia in 30 years, targeting members of the Jewish community.
The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat reaffirmed its commitment to supporting its members in advocating for peace, tolerance, and diversity. “Our thoughts and prayers are with our Australian brothers and sisters at this difficult time,” Waqa added, stressing that what affects one nation affects all within the Pacific family.
This sense of unity and shared support is vital as communities across the region come together to address the impacts of such violence, advocating for a future that honors diversity and promotes harmony.
