The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) has raised alarms regarding the need for smaller nations in the region to safeguard their sovereignty amid China’s increasing influence. Baron Waqa, the Secretary-General of PIF, stressed that new partnerships must be tailored to the specific needs of the Pacific island countries. With the United States reducing its crucial aid, including funding for the PIF, there are significant concerns that island nations may make uninformed decisions that do not fully consider long-term implications.
Waqa called upon PIF members to prioritize their own interests and autonomy while entering agreements, ensuring that external interests do not dictate their choices. He acknowledged that many current deals, particularly with China, are arranged on a bilateral basis, raising issues of transparency and oversight.
