The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) is set to bolster regional unity while adhering to the decisions made by leaders under the 2050 Strategy. The focus for the coming year will be on promoting peace, engaging with external partners, and advocating on global issues.

Secretary General Baron Waqa emphasized that in today’s increasingly contested geostrategic landscape, unity among the Pacific Islands is more crucial than ever. He reiterated that the PIF serves as the main political platform in the region for dialogue and collaborative decision-making, playing a vital role in enhancing regional unity.

This past year, the leaders reinforced the Blue Pacific vision through the Ocean of Peace Declaration, which highlights their unwavering commitment to peace, stability, and open communication within the region. Waqa noted that the next stage of work on this declaration has commenced, centering on its implementation and fostering engagement with member countries, partners, and regional institutions.

He indicated that progress has been made in several priority areas, including climate resilience, economic connectivity, and enhancing regional cooperation as part of the broader strategic agenda. A comprehensive review of the regional architecture has also contributed to these advancements.

Looking forward, Waqa stated that the emphasis will remain on executing plans and integrating further within the region. Areas such as climate resilience, economic connectivity, and the fortification of regional systems will continue to be prioritized. Additionally, the PIF will pursue global engagement and advocacy, adhering to the 2026 Leaders Policy to ensure that partnerships align with regional priorities, promote unity, and uphold regional integrity.

This concerted effort signals a promising direction for the Pacific Islands, reinforcing the notion that cooperation and unity are the cornerstones for a stable and prosperous future in the region.
